Ten Iconic Pieces Of Movie Jewellery

As a jewellery fan always looking out for stylish and outstanding jewellery ideas, I keep my eyes out for jewellery in movies. Of course, the pieces used are often props and not made with genuine diamonds, but that does not make them any less attractive – after all its what they look like on-screen that counts!

Many people like to invest in jewellery that they have seen in movies or TV because it looks so beautiful, or sometimes because it strikes an emotional chord with the viewer.

Here is my Top Ten of favourite or striking jewellery that I have noticed in movies over the years.

Do you agree with my choices? What are some of your favourite pieces of jewellery in movies?

These are in no particular order; I love them all!

1) The Heart of the Ocean necklace worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic

This piece was actually made using cubic zirconia with a white gold setting. Over the years, jewellers have created replicas using real diamonds and a sapphire centrepiece.

2) Vivien Leigh's necklace from Gone with the Wind

Replicas of this necklace are still made today. Necklaces made during the 19th century of this type would have used salmon pink coral with gold chains. Modern reproductions might use Swarovski crystal pearls with a slightly different finish, losing the original coral's iridescent effect.

3) Teardrop necklace and earring set worn by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman

Replicas made with cubic zirconia and silver-tone brass are used in inexpensive versions but wouldn't we all prefer to have a quality version made with white gold, red sapphires and diamonds?

4) Marilyn Monroe's diamond necklace from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

The movie that coined the phrase' diamonds are a girl's best friend' and is reputed to have boosted diamond sales contained several striking pieces of diamond jewellery. Some pieces were real such as the Moon of Baroda featured in the image below.

Not many people, no matter how wealthy could afford to buy the entire set of diamond Jewellery in that scene. The centrepiece was the Moon of Baroda a 24-carat canary diamond cut into a pear shape. Most of the jewellery used in the movie was costume jewellery of little inherent value – no matter how striking it looked.

5) A charm necklace as worn by Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Not diamond-studded, but striking, nonetheless. Replicas can look great in casual outfits and are readily available as costume jewellery. Check out Amazon or Etsy if you'd like to emulate this look!

6) Keira Knightley's jewellery in Anna Karenina

Jewellery

In the movie Anna Karenina, Keira Knightley was able to wear $2 million of Chanel jewellery. Apparently, this was due to her connections to the Chanel brand. The jewellery set the tone of the scenes in which it was used and would look gorgeous on any woman wanting to look her most memorable.

7) Natalie Portman wore a watch and jewellery from Piaget in Jackie

In the biopic Jackie which followed the life of Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis, Natalie Portman was able to use the elegant jewellery of Piaget. I particularly loved her jade dialled gold and diamond watch. The pink gold, diamond tassel earrings were also striking and lovely.

8) Ann Hathaway's Cartier necklace in Ocean's 8

This necklace was made in cubic zirconia set in white gold. Cartier designed this dazzling necklace for Ann in the movie. It is a spectacular piece that reputedly took eight weeks to create. This necklace's design is based on an original from the 1930s that was designed by Jacques Cartier.

9) Harry Winston's jewellery worn by Jennifer Lopez in Maid In Manhattan

Jewellery in Movies

Jennifer Lopez was adorned with dazzling jewellery loaned to the production by Harry Winston. Everything looked perfect on Jennifer in this Cinderella-style movie from 2002. The piece that caught my eye was the classic Wreath diamond necklace and earring set.

10) Sarah Jessica Parker's black diamond engagement ring in Sex and the City 2

We can probably agree that the movie was not worth the wait! However, Mr Big (Chris Noth) gave Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) a gorgeous black diamond engagement ring.

The movie and engagement ring sparked a trend for black diamonds in engagement rings and everyday jewellery.

The 5-carat black diamond was set with pave diamonds into 18K white gold to make a stunning jewellery piece. The ring was designed by Itay Malkin who produced a limited edition run of identical rings that sold for $10,000. Other jewellers introduced lower-cost versions to meet the demands of the new trend.

While not many of us can afford to pay what these stunning pieces of jewellery would cost, on the ball jewellers are keen to help us to 'buy the look'. Keen-eyed buyers can also spot pieces that have the same kind of design flair as these movie specials.

As Mr Big said to Carrie when she asked him why he gave her a black diamond engagement ring "Because you're not like anyone else." Well, you or your loved one is also not like anyone else. Owning a special piece of jewellery with a unique heritage is something that we can all do. Best of all, as we have seen in this top ten listing, you don't need to be a millionaire to be different! Unlike some of these pieces, you can have real diamonds – they don't have to be imitations made of cubic zirconia or paste. You can have something better than movie stars wore in their hit films!
