How Women Can Get The Jewellery They Really Want

Here’s something that most women never do: buy their own fine jewellery. Women have been buying costume jewellery forever, but the beautiful jewellery that lasts for years or even gets passed down through generations? Women have left that to men. In the last few years, jewellery self purchase has started to become a thing.

This article came about as a result of an article about what to do when a guy buys Christmas gift jewellery that the recipient doesn’t like.

As I wrote it, I got to thinking, did it have to be that way.

When I checked into our sales, I saw that most jewellery is bought by men as gifts, and some is purchased by women, possibly for themselves. Still, I reckon that even a good part of those purchases are gifts – for other women. Also, it tended to be lower value.

Guys spend more on fine jewellery, and they buy more of it. Is that right when it is women who are going to be wearing it? Isn’t that somewhat back to front?

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Let’s get this straight, as a guy, I like to buy my partner jewellery and, as far as I can tell, she likes to receive and wear it. We don’t think that should stop! But here’s the thing – women know what they want, what they like and what they’ll wear far better than any guy can know these things.

So, ladies, why shouldn’t you choose and buy the jewellery that you know you’ll love?

I did a little research, and I discovered that ‘self purchasing' is becoming a thing – but it’s not a big thing – yet! But it should be!

The Past Is Not The Present – It’s Certainly Not The Future!

Why do men buy most of the fine jewellery women wear? I can’t know all this for sure, and it’d take research above my pay grade, but here’s what I think.

1)     It’s a history thing. In the past, men earned most of the money and controlled the budget. Most women certainly did not have the money to afford to buy the jewellery they liked. They ended up being grateful for what they got, helping things along with hints and signs, pictures in magazines, comments walking past a high street jeweller’s window, that kind of thing.

These days though, women earn their own money and often make the same as, or more than, their men. So, you can do this!

2)     It’s a cultural thing. And yes, things have changed, but habits die hard and, to be fair, how many women would refuse a gift of diamond jewellery? Not many of you, I think! Back to culture…
Women were subservient to men in the past, and women still are in some cultures and countries. Jewellery was something a man bought for his woman to show the world her value and his own wealth.

One way or another, men bought jewellery for women because women lacked the independence and ability to be self-sufficient. In Britain, that’s no longer the case. Women do not self purchase fine diamond jewellery because it is not their habit to do so.

Now that women are building their careers and have a large amount of disposable income, isn’t it time you took over some of the jewellery buying from your men?

Jewellery Is An Indulgence - You Deserve To Be indulged!

Yes, jewellery is an indulgence, nobody needs jewellery, but don’t we all need to treat ourselves? I know, as a man, that I do. I have a collection of watches, and I love my watches. Nobody needs more than one, or possibly two watches.

Truthfully, with a mobile phone in my pocket, it is hard to argue that I need even one watch. But there’s me with a dozen watches in one display box. There are several more hidden away because I need a new display box, and I am awaiting delivery of a watch that is being handmade – it’ll be ready in about ten months. I buy the watches as a treat, to celebrate an achievement, as a gift for myself, a special treat.

Why should women wait for a guy to give them that treat? You have the right and ability to treat yourself with no need to justify what you are doing to anyone else. You deserve to feel good about choosing to invest in a piece of jewellery that you love, and that will last you a lifetime. After all, it will almost certainly last longer than any of my watches. After all, a diamond is forever. Nobody ever said that about a Rolex or Patek Phillipe or Longines wristwatch!

Jewellery self purchase is how women get to own the fine jewellery they really want to wear and own. Why wait for a man to choose what you should wear and how you should look?

Buy Your Own Diamond Jewellery!

Treat Jewellery Like Your Shoes Or Purses

Historically, men bought the jewellery; we’ve covered that. But what if women started to think about jewellery in the same way you buy purses and shoes. How many women have only ‘enough’ shoes or purses? Not too many.

Women buy shoes and purses as treats. In many cases, they are priced at an accessible (but not inexpensive) level. They can be easily justified with thoughts like ‘that pair of shoes will perfectly match that outfit I want to wear at the weekend.’ But, of course, it’s the pleasure of shopping, choosing, treating oneself and the look of the items when worn.

Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of buying a pair of costume jewellery earrings that look good today but will fall apart in a few weeks or months – if they don’t tarnish first, you bought yourself a pair of diamond solitaire stud earrings in a classic rub-over setting?
