Eternity rings are a form of the wedding band, a custom dating six millennia ago to ancient Egypt. In later centuries wedding bands became decorated with a continuous circle of precious stones, often including diamonds. Historically eternity rings were given to married couples to mark a special anniversary. Still, these days the custom has broadened considerably hence their use on other gift-giving occasions. At the same time, we are starting to see eternity rings used more often as wedding or engagement rings. We might be seeing the end of the undecorated gold wedding band, replaced by diamond eternity rings, often stacked with a matching engagement ring.

In recent years, friends have started to buy eternity rings to signify the strength of their friendship. I wish I had friends so generous! They can also become treasured gifts for bridesmaids.
Although eternity rings were known to be given millennia ago, the first eternity rings in styles that we would recognise today date back to the 18th century when women started to wear what were called 'keeper' rings on either side of their wedding rings to protect and accentuate them.

The problem is that symbolism does not always equal practicality! Some people find that diamonds around the whole of the ring can be uncomfortable as the gems can rub against the soft skin of the sides of the adjacent fingers. Also, there is a risk that gemstones may be damaged or lost from the bottom of the ring when objects are grasped, even with the best-made rings.
Similarly, damage can occur when the hands and fingers are set down onto surfaces. For that reason, many people choose a half eternity ring. In many cases, a half eternity ring will look very similar to a full eternity ring. Still, they are much more practical in real life, making it possible to wear a half eternity ring every day rather than just on special occasions.
