Engagement Ring Settings – A Closer Look

In jewellery, the term setting refers to two different aspects of the ring’s design and appearance. The engagement ring setting type describes how the gemstone is held in place on the ring – keeping it secure. We posted an article about the engagement ring setting types in this article.

In this article, we look at the different setting styles and describe the five most popular forms, all of which we offer in our diamond ring collections.

Setting style refers to the design features that determine the overall look and style of the ring. Here are the most popular styles that people buy.

Diamond Solitaire - The Most Popular Of All Setting Styles

For most couples, the solitaire setting style for an engagement ring is the one they prefer. While design trends change over time, the solitaire is eternal and is a favourite when it comes to engagement rings. The solitaire can be subtle but not simple or straightforward.

The cut and quality of the diamond are very important, as the setting of the solitaire puts the diamond in the spotlight. The classic round brilliant or the popular princess cut is what you should choose. Something more distinctive in a pear, marquise, or emerald shape would be an alternative. Antique style cushion-cut diamonds recall the style of the early 20th century. You might even think about a heart-shaped diamond in a solitaire engagement ring that tells a story of romance and love.

A round cut diamond is ideal for those who like brilliance, sparkle and fire. Our G/SI graded diamonds are the ultimate in precision craftsmanship and are regarded by experts as offering the best balance between quality and cost in terms of cut and visual display.

Bezel Settings – Almost The Most Popular Ring Style

Bezel set rings are chosen by many people for their modern look and practicality. The practical design does not make the ring look any less beautiful. This most secure setting type places the viewer's focus upon the centrally placed diamond encased over the diamond's girdle with elegant precious metal. The setting keeps the diamond safe from damaging knocks and focuses the eyes on the star attraction - the single diamond.

Those with an active lifestyle are particularly suited to the bezel setting. It's not possible for the stone and setting to catch or scratch on clothing or equipment. This setting is perfect for those who enjoy sports or operate machinery. The only downside to this style is that the diamond's sparkle is reduced by the bezel. The slightly less vivid effect of the diamond is preferred by many people.

With bezel settings, you have the choice between a full or semi bezel. A full bezel is where the entire top and sides of the diamond are covered, while a semi bezel is where only a portion of the profile of the diamond is covered. A semi bezel gives a slight compromise in protection but enables the diamond to sparkle more and enables a profile view of the entire height of the diamond.

Pave Settings – For People Who Want Never-Ending Sparkle

In a pave setting ring, the ring's entire surface is adorned with diamonds, making a continuous sparkling surface. The pave engagement rings are made with closely set diamonds each secured with minute beads of precious metal. You can choose designs with three or more rows of diamonds. You can have rows of diamonds sparkling at every angle, and not settle for just one stone. Look out for designs that have diamonds running around the entire circumference of the ring or just a part of it. The latter type can be more practical for daily wear as well as being somewhat less costly.

Pave settings give you a dazzling sparkle from the many diamonds and you can not see the metal of the underlying band. And to repeat, there's that impressive extra sparkle from the gemstones. A stunning line of light and glitter is the result. If you chose a ring with diamonds all around the band, altering the ring's size will be difficult for the jeweller to carry out, so take care to get the size of the band just right.

Three Stone Rings – A Great Way To Include Different Precious Stones

Three-stone rings, sometimes called trilogy rings are a great symbol of a relationship, as they represent the past, present and future of your relationship.

Many people believe that if you wear a 3-stone ring, then it means that your relationship has been going for a while and will continue to go strong.

Traditional diamond engagement rings, which feature a large centre stone flanked by smaller side stones, are still a popular choice for brides. However, modern engagement ring designs are now much more likely to feature equally sized diamonds. Princess-cut diamonds are a popular choice for a 3-stone diamond ring.

We have designs that feature rubies and sapphires set alongside the central diamond for a stunning visual effect.

A beautiful variation of the three-stone ring concept is the four-stone ring. We also offer designs with five or seven precious stones, many of these have a mixture of diamonds with sapphires, emeralds or rubies.

Halo – A Setting That Enhances The Centre Diamond

A multitude of pave diamonds surrounds the larger centre diamond in the halo setting. The centre diamond is framed in a very striking way by the addition of the pave diamonds. The smaller pave diamonds can serve to amplify the visual effect of the ring giving additional sparkle and giving the impression of a larger diamond.

With its unique look, the halo setting is sure to complement almost any style of outfit. For a more traditional look, you can opt for one of our vintage halo settings which offer an authentic period feel.

The halo setting style first rose to prominence during the 1920s falling into disfavour for several decades. Due to a growing interest in vintage styles in recent years, the halo is seeing a resurgence, with modern design twists making this setting style into a contemporary favourite.

Halo rings come in a variety of styles and shapes, but the most popular are princess cut, round and oval. These are the most popular because they make the ring look most like a large diamond.

With small diamonds that don't just circle the main stone but are set in patterns at every angle and on every profile, halo rings are becoming more intricate, providing intriguing profile views as well. Double halo designs and coloured gemstone halos make a feature of stones in different colours encircled with bright white diamonds, as well as other popular designs.
