Diamond Earrings: Which Ones Should You Buy?

If you're thinking about buying diamond earrings, you may want to shop around for the best prices.

Good diamond earrings can be pricey, but they're very versatile, which gives you lots of room for creativity when you're putting together an outfit.

Diamond earrings can be a piece of expensive jewellery, but you don't have to break the bank for a nice pair.

This article will provide you with the information and guidance you need to choose the best diamond earrings for yourself or as a gift.

What To Know Before You Buy Diamond Earrings

Choosing Diamonds

When choosing diamonds, there are two main types: natural and lab-grown. Natural diamonds are mined from the Earth. They come in a wide range of colours and sizes, and they are considered more rare and valuable than lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are created in a lab using an electron beam or laser to fuse carbon atoms together to create a hard, synthetic gemstone. If you want the beauty of diamonds but cannot afford the 'real thing', then perhaps lab-grown diamonds might be the way to go.

Most people prefer natural diamonds; there's something about owning 'the real thing' - pride of ownership, association with rarity and, of course, the knowledge that one is wearing a natural product almost as old as the Earth itself!

The best thing about diamond earrings is that they can go with any outfit, whether it's formal or casual. You can wear them to work or a night out on the town. Diamonds are not just for women. Men can also wear diamond jewellery, including earrings.

Diamond Cut And Shape

Round diamonds with a brilliant-cut are always popular with their classic style and shape. Cushion, emerald, heart, oval, round, marquise and pear are just a few of the diamond shapes available and used in modern diamond earrings. If you're looking for stud earrings, the brilliant round cut and princess cut are the most popular. The square shape of princess cut earrings gives diamond earrings greater brilliance and a flashier appearance.

Diamond cut refers to the quality of the cutting. The better the quality of the cut (symmetry, polish quality, overall proportions). As the word suggests, the shape refers to the physical shape of the diamond - round, oval, marquise, princess. For more about diamond shapes, see this article.

Diamond Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to how clear it looks. The higher the clarity grade of the diamond, the higher its price will be. As a natural product, a diamond usually has internal flaws that can affect the way the diamond sparkles and how brilliant it appears. The budget-minded will be pleased to know that it is often possible to save a little money on the clarity in earrings because the diamonds are often very small, making any flaws very hard to see.

There are six grades of clarity recorded by most diamond grading labs using the scale devised by the GIA, the world's leading and most reputable diamond grading laboratory.

The grades used by the GIA are as follows: Included, Slightly Included, Very Slightly Included, Very, Very Slightly Included, Internally Flawless, Flawless

These categories can be further broken down into sub-grades; however, it takes a real expert with expensive equipment to ascertain these fine gradations. Most of our earrings have diamonds graded as Slightly Included (SI), as this is the sweet spot between price and quality. Most people cannot see any internal flaws in the gemstone at this grade.

Diamond Earring Styles

The most popular diamond earring styles are studs, hoops and drops. Stud earrings are the most versatile making a great choice and an excellent choice for almost any occasion, from work to formal social events. Hoop and drop earrings look flashier and have much more movement, making them look more brilliant and showier, so they're ideal for formal occasions.

Keeping Your Diamond Earrings In Place

There are three main ways to fix diamond earrings in place.

Screw backs: These are probably the most secure form of earring closure, but they are a little more fiddly to attach. The earring has a long post with a threaded end. The post goes through the ear and is fixed in place with a threaded back piece. While these will not usually come off accidentally, if the screw back is lost, it is not possible to wear the earring until the screw back is replaced.

Hooks: In this style, a metal loop goes through the earlobe and hangs between the earlobe and the head. The fitting is secure and unlikely to come out of the earlobe accidentally. This style works well on hoops and drop earrings.

Push-on backs: This is the most popular fixing type for stud earrings. A long post goes through the earlobe, and a sliding clip makes a friction fit to the post holding the studs in place. Friction clips can loosen over time and have been the cause of much frustration over the decades as women discover they have lost an earring and have no way to find it.
