What Are Torque Bangles?
There are two common ways to wear bangles: with a gap or as a complete circle that opens and closes with a hinge and a clasp. The type of bangle that has an opening is called a torque bangle although sometimes they're referred to as cuff bangles. Cuff bangles are usually much wider than a torque bangle.
An advantage of the torque bangle is that it will usually be smaller than the width of your hand and can be worn comfortably loose without the risk of it falling off your wrist.
The most popular type of torque bangles is the traditional ball end bangle where the ends of the gap have a ball. The ball style is easier to put on and remove from the wrist than flat-ended bangles and many people find they can be worn comfortably for long periods of time making them preferable to designs that lack the ball ends.
The Difference Between Bangles And Bracelets
Many people use the words 'bangle' and 'bracelet' interchangeably but they are not the same thing. A bracelet is always made with flexible links joined together to make a whole. A bracelet will always have some form of a clasp to securely join the two ends together.

The History Of Torque bangles
The 8th century BC is believed to be when the first torque bangles were developed in ancient Greece. Bangle bracelets and necklaces were popular during the early Middle Ages and were made from metals such as bronze, silver and, for the wealthy, gold.
You may see alternate spellings for the name. Today the most popular spelling is torque, although you may see torc or torq used by some retailers and designers. The Latin word torc means to twist or turn. The wording became synonymous with torque bangles and necklaces that were made from bronze or gold and could be twisted to open them to place around the wrist.
Before hardened gold alloys were introduced, the relatively soft metal was twisted to open the ends of the bangle. Modern, harder gold used in today's jewellery does not need to be twisted, relying instead upon the natural springiness of the metal. This means that modern torque bracelets are much less likely to become permanently bent in use.
In the past, the gap between the ends of the bangle was quite small. In modern torque bangles, the gap is larger, this makes the bangle easier to slip on or off the writings without twisting or bending the metal.

Modern Torque Bangles
Most modern torque bangles have rounded balls at the ends of the bangle although some are made with smooth rounded ends that lie flat against the wrist. The ball style is easier to put over the wrist and many wearers find this style to be more comfortable. The ball-shaped ends are often decorated with diamonds and other precious or semi-precious gemstones and crystals.
Torque bangles come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. They can be made of metals such as gold, silver, brass, stainless steel, titanium, copper, and many other types of metals. They can also be made of other materials like wood, ceramic, resin, glass, acrylic, plastic and many other types of materials. Some people prefer bangles made of natural materials such as wood, bone, leather, horn, bamboo, shell, ivory, or mother of pearl.
Torque bangles have become fashionable as male jewellery, often made from silver. Both male and female designs may use more complex construction using twisted wires for a rope effect. other designs, particularly for men, have a broad area that is suitable for engraving.
Unlike bracelets, torque bangles are not suitable for use with charms unless the ball ends are screw mounted. If you choose such a design, be aware that frequent screwing and unscrewing of the ball ends will cause the screw threads to deteriorate over time making removal and replacement difficult or impossible. We suggest sticking to a traditional charm bracelet if adding charms is a requirement!
