What Carat Size Of Diamond Is Needed For An Impressive Engagement Ring?

The burning question on almost every man's mind when he decides that NOW is the time to start looking at buying an engagement ring. How big a diamond does his engagement ring need to have? For many of us, it isn't just the buying of the ring. It's the will she or won't she, what will she think of the ring I buy for her. What will her friends say – and what about her parents?

There are so many people to please and possibly impress, and all wrapped up in such a tiny thing – a diamond engagement ring that sits on the 4th finger of the left hand. If you're gonna put a ring on it, that's exactly where 'it' is located!

So, let's get into the topic, look at some numbers, check out some strategies and even a way to make the problem solve itself – read on to find out how we at All Diamond manage to solve the biggest problems of engagement ring buyers!

How Big Is A Big Diamond Engagement Ring?

Size is often not so much how big it is, but how you use it. Diamond engagement rings fall into that category to the surprise of many! That's one of the secrets we'll be sharing further down the page.

Film stars, celebrities and the wealthy can afford to make gestures that are simply impossible for us. When you see Reese Witherspoon wears a 4-carat engagement ring, or Kelly Clarkson sports a 5-carat canary yellow engagement ring, remember that they are wealthy people, married to wealthy guys. What is normal for them is not normal for us.

When asked, most women will say that a 2-carat engagement ring is big. If she were to see what we can do with 2-carats of diamonds she'd be very impressed! The central diamond's average size in an engagement ring is around 0.9 carats with a total diamond weight of about 1.3 carats.

That's a big difference from what the likes of Victoria Beckham, Reese Witherspoon and Kelly Clarkson swan around in. But if you were to put a well-cut ring with 2 carats of diamonds on it upon your girl's ring finger, there's no way she is going to be disappointed as she says 'YES' to the most important question of her life.

When she shows off her new diamond engagement ring to family and friends, you can be sure that they will be genuinely impressed. There will be no cause for disappointment and quiet regret!

Given that we know the average size of a diamond engagement ring is around 1.3 carats, even if you choose a ring in that class, in most cases, your new fiancée will be wearing a ring bigger than most of her friends or family can manage. No need for envy or disappointment there!

All Diamond's Magic Can Make Less Seem Like A Lot More!

On of the jeweller's biggest secrets is that the diamond's weight does not define how large the diamond looks on the ring. The most common shape of diamond is the classic diamond shape, the round or brilliant cut shape. It is easy to understand why the classic diamond shape is so loved. It is the shape that sparkles the most and, especially when it is large, looks hugely impressive. But your jeweller knows that if you want a large looking diamond on a bit of a budget, then choosing a diamond shape that has a larger top surface can look much larger. With modern cutting techniques, there's not much loss of sparkle – in fact, most people would not notice the difference, but they will notice the apparent size.

If you want to get the maximum diamond for your money, look at oval cut diamonds. You'll get almost all the sparkle, and the longer shape will make the diamond seem much larger! In s similar vein, look out for the relatively rare but very lovely marquise cut. This is an elongated shape that runs to points at each end. They make the wearer's fingers appear slenderer and longer.

You could check out emerald-cut diamonds. These are a flattish, rectangular shape. With only a few facets, emerald cut diamonds have a more subdued, subtle light display, but this style is often less costly, size for size, than other shapes.

The Things You Can't See Can Pay For The Big Diamond Ring That You Can See!

Who can we blame for this common buying mistake? Not the buyer! At All Diamond, we took a long hard look at what people really wanted from a diamond ring. Near the top of the list was the size of the diamond. That's why we wrote this article. But we found that although clients were often paying a lot of money for the best possible quality of diamonds, they could not tell the difference between those and slightly lower quality diamonds. But there was a considerable difference in cost.

What is the point of paying for something that nobody can see? If you can afford a flawless diamond ring, don't let us stop you. But if you need to be a little careful with the money in your bank account, take note of this: Many of our diamond rings and other diamond jewellery feature diamonds with colour grade G and clarity SI.

This grade offers a wonderful compromise between price and quality and is a hidden sweet spot for buying diamond jewellery. G colour grade is classed as nearly colourless, meaning that any colour tint is not usually visible to the naked eye. The SI grade refers to the clarity of the diamond. It suggests the diamond might have slight flaws, typically visible only under 10x magnification. Still, under good lighting and with a sharp eye, some people might be able to notice a flaw.

When you buy a diamond engagement ring with diamonds of G/SI quality, you are getting a lot more ring for your money than if you chose a more perfect ring – and we promise, nobody is going to tell the difference outside of a jeweller's workshop!
