8 Things I Wish I'd Known Before I First Went To Buy Diamond Jewellery

There are so many diamond jewellery shops online that it can be hard to find the perfect diamond jewellery. This article is a must-read if you are about to buy diamond jewellery!

This article is for people who love buying diamond jewellery.

Diamond jewellery is a dream for many women, but purchasing diamond jewellery isn't as straightforward as it sounds. Diamonds are not the only type of precious gemstone, but they are the ambition of most women, even if the diamonds are teamed up with other precious stones. You need to know so many things before you purchase diamond jewellery. This article is for women who want to buy diamond jewellery.

Before purchasing diamond jewellery, know your options and understand how to make the most of your next diamond jewellery purchase. Read on to discover eight things you'll be glad to know about before buying diamond jewellery.

1.       Know your budget.

It's easy; you know you want to buy a piece of diamond jewellery. You've checked your credit card balance or saved up some money. You're set – it is time to go shopping!

And then, you start browsing the windows of your mall jewellers or lingering over the collections of jewellery on our site (or others). And then it happens. You see 'The One', the ring, necklace, earrings or whatever, and you're smitten. You spend more than you can afford, now you must repay the credit card for longer than you planned.

Or, it can be that you underspend and end up with something that is not quite right, which is not as lovely as the item you could've afforded.

Either way, set a budget and stick to it. Going slightly over or under your budget is reasonable, but it is seldom a good idea to try to buy expensive items without setting a budget ahead of time.

2.       Avoid imitation diamonds.

First, when you buy diamond jewellery from a retailer, you should expect it to come with a diamond grading certificate if the central diamond is 0.50 carats or larger. We work with the GIA, the world's leading diamond grading laboratory. A reputable certification ensures that you got what you paid for – no fakes or imitations.

Secondly, don't try to kid yourself or others by saving a few pounds and buying one of the many imitations of diamonds. You won't ever have the pride of ownership that comes with buying 'the best', and, believe it or not, people will often know that what you are wearing is fake – there's almost always something that gives the game away. Perhaps there's too much or too little sparkle, or the settings are poor quality.

3.       Get a free ring sizer.

While most rings can be resized, it isn't possible for all types, especially with eternity rings or others where the diamonds cover most or all of the ring's band. And, apart from anything else, getting a ring resized will always add unnecessary inconvenience to your life.

We have an article about getting the right size ring – Click Here!

You can download a free ring sizer from the linked page to ensure that the ring you buy is a perfect fit. There are even tips on secretly getting the right size ring without the recipient knowing anything about it!

4.       Keep your ring in the box.

It is tempting to keep your jewellery out on display, but it is not the best idea. When you receive a diamond ring or any other fine jewellery, we recommend keeping it safe and sound in the presentation box that we supply with all our jewellery purchases. If you have a jewellery box, then keep it in there.

When you keep your jewellery on your dressing table, you risk damaging it or, if any of the gemstones become loose, losing them in the carpet, never to be seen again. And that's to say nothing about the temptation to light-fingered visitors to your home.

Here's an article about buying jewellery boxes. A well-designed jewellery box is even better than our presentation boxes. Click Here

5.       Make sure that your jewellery is insured.

Jewellery is costly to replace. How would you manage if your new necklace broke and you lost the pendant? What if your home was robbed? Perhaps your earring falls out and is lost?

You need to ensure that your valuables – and not just jewellery – are insured against loss and damage. Some of us already have adequate coverage with our home insurance policies, but many people do not have any insurance coverage at all.

Even if you already have some form of insurance cover, it is worth checking your policy to ensure it is adequate. Insuring your valuables should not cost a fortune, and you will think it a bargain when something terrible happens to your treasured diamond jewellery!

6.       Buy fine diamond jewellery that will last a lifetime.

When you buy diamond jewellery, you are not purchasing costume jewellery – although, sadly, there is quite a lot of diamond jewellery made to the same standards as most costume jewellery. Costume jewellery is great; it is made to look good for a while and replaced by something new. Diamond jewellery is different – or at least it should be! Diamonds last forever; they take millions of years to make, so why choose poorly cut, low-grade diamonds and mount them in soft sterling silver jewellery?

At All Diamond, our jewellery is designed and handcrafted for a lifetime of wear – in fact, we guarantee it! Buying jewellery that can last a lifetime does not mean compromising design or appearance. It is about using quality materials and skilled, careful craftsmanship.

7.       Have your diamond jewellery appraised.

Knowing the value of your jewellery is essential, especially for insurance purposes. If your jewellery is not valued correctly, you risk having any insurance claim devalued, leaving you out of pocket.

At All Diamond, we will provide you with an insurance valuation certificate. This document will be OK for getting insurance after you have purchased your jewellery, but prices change. After a few years, you will need to have your jewellery appraised again to provide your insurer with proof of the current value of your valuables.

8.       Make sure the precious metal is hallmarked.

When you buy jewellery made from gold, silver, palladium or platinum, the item should carry a hallmark with very few exceptions in the UK. The exceptions are items manufactured before 1950, where the seller can prove it was made before 1950 or where the item is tiny: 1 gram for gold, 7.78 grams for silver, 0.5 grams for platinum and 1 gram for palladium. Even if the item was made overseas, the item must be hallmarked, although the hallmark can be applied elsewhere than the UK.

A hallmark is a small engraving or stamp in the precious metal that shows the purity of the precious metal and where the testing was done. The UK has some of the strictest rules about statutory hallmarking in the world.

In conclusion, I wish I had read this article before purchasing my first piece of diamond jewellery. I would have avoided the stress and headache and saved myself a lot of money and grief.
